Why did you choose to go to Italy with Boundless Life Worldschooling Program?

There is a little bit of a backstory here. 2.5 years ago at the end of 2023, my amazing husband Ryan passed away at just 41 years old. He had been diagnosed with Brain Cancer 17 months prior when our children were just 3 months, newly 4 and 6. When he passed away, I feel into such despair and really struggled with how to move forward. Then I found all these messages Ryan and I had sent each other where we had been “planning” an epic trip through Switzerland and Italy that we said we would do together once he got better.

9 months after he passed, I took my 3 kids (now 2, 6 and 8) on that trip to the Swiss Alps and the Italian Lakes. And it was at that moment that everything changed for me. Travel became my therapy, as it helped me get out of my own head and back into the larger world.

A little less than a year later in 2025, I had the opportunity to go to London for 4 months as part of my job with a tech company, and I jumped at the chance. It was such an amazing experience to fully immerse ourselves in a new place and learn a new culture and way of living (we are in the suburbs here in the USA and were smack-dab in the city near Regent’s Park in London!).

We traveled throughout Europe during our summer in London and we just all fell in love - instead of city or state “hopping” like we do here in the US, we were able to take the train to Paris or a quick flight to Dublin. We loved walking everywhere, the feeling of our little “village” within the larger city of London, the football (soccer) team the kids joined and all our neighbors. We new we wanted to do something similiar again.

When we came back to the US, I immediately started researching worldschool programs. I knew that if we did an international move again, I’d want to do it with a program that was designed for American families in a foreign place. Because while we loved our time in London, it was a LOT to figure out housing, schooling, our co-working space and all the other logistics that come with an international move like that.

So when my research lead me to the Boundless Life Worldschooling Program, I immediately knew I was on to something.

📚 What Type of Education is Offered by Boundless Worldschooling?

The education model behind the Boundless Life program is designed to rethink traditional schooling by blending academic learning with real-world experiences and global exploration. Through Boundless Education, learning extends beyond a typical classroom and becomes integrated with the environment, culture, and community of each destination where families live. The program draws inspiration from progressive systems—particularly Finnish education system—while incorporating elements of Montessori education method and Project‑based learning. This approach places students at the center of the learning process, encouraging curiosity, independence, and creativity. Instead of focusing heavily on lectures and memorization, students engage in meaningful experiences that help them apply academic concepts to real-world situations.

A typical day mixes structure and flexibility. Students have Mastery Time to build core skills at their own pace with teacher support and personalized tools. During Quest Time, they work in teams on interdisciplinary projects that spark critical thinking and creative problem-solving tied to real-world themes. This blend of independent study and teamwork builds confidence and collaboration skills.

The program emphasizes cultural immersion, outdoor learning, and following students’ interests. As families move internationally, students live in different cultures, learn new languages, and adapt to new environments. This global exposure builds adaptability and a wider view of the world. Nature activities, creative projects, and time for personal interests are built into the schedule to support whole-child development. The aim is to teach strong academics while also growing life skills—teamwork, communication, resilience, and the local culture.

🌲 All About the Boundless Worldschool Community

The Boundless Life community is a huge part of what sold us on the experience. The idea that we will be with other like-minded families who prioritize living, learning, and traveling abroad at the same time.

Rather than arriving in a new country and starting from scratch like we did in London, we’ll be joining a network of other parents and children who are all looking to make friends and experience this new place together.

Every Boundless locaton has a “boots on the ground” team that takes care of everything from pre-arrival logistics to I’ve been so impressed with the way they have reached out to us proactively to arrange things before we arrive.

The program helps create these connections through pre-arrival introductions (like a zoom meeting for all the families and a slack channel to stay in touch), community platforms, and regular in-person events once families arrive. Activities such as family outings, cultural excursions, yoga sessions, hikes, and social gatherings make it easy for parents and children to build friendships and feel supported in a new environment.

Each location also has a local team that organizes events and helps introduce families to one another.

If you need to get work done, you get 24/7 access to a coworking spaces nearby the education center.

Known as the Boundless Coworking Hub, these shared workspaces provide a professional yet friendly environment where remote workers, freelancers, and entrepreneurs can log online and get things done.

The hubs include dedicated work areas, meeting pods or private booths for calls, high-speed internet, and comfortable lounge and break spaces. Many locations also feature kitchens or dining areas along with complimentary coffee, tea, and snacks to support a comfortable workday.

Parents have 24/7 access to the coworking hub, allowing them to work across different time zones or schedules. Access to the hub is included as part of the Boundless program fee, meaning families can use the space as much as they want throughout their stay while collaborating, networking, and sharing ideas with other members of the community.

Cohort VS Summer Camps

At Boundless Life, families can participate in either cohorts or camps, depending on how long they want to stay and the type of experience they’re looking for. Cohorts are the core program and typically last about three months, giving families the opportunity to fully settle into a destination while children participate in the structured Boundless Educationcurriculum and parents work from the community co working hubs. Camps, on the other hand, are shorter experiences—usually around four weeks during the summer—and focus more on fun, cultural exploration, and group activities for kids rather than a full academic program. They have a curriculum structure and a week long break usually in the middle.

Q: Is it permanent?
A: No. So, boundless offers 3 month cohorts and 3 & 4 week long camps (in the summer and winter). There are some families who go from cohort to cohort and make it a more permanent experience. Q: Do you need a visa to do the Boundless Life Worldschooling and be in Italy 3 months?
A: No, you do not need a special visa do Boundless in Tuscany, Italy. That’s because for stays under 90 days, you are simply considered a “tourist”. This is the case for most European countries in the Schengen Zone.

Q: What is the Schengen Zone and how does it work with Boundless Worldschooling Visas?
A: If you haven’t heard of the Schengen zone (I hadn’t until last year!, it is comprised of most of the countries of Europe. For these countries, there is a rule called the 90/180 Day Rule. It states that Non-EU nationals can spend a total of 90 days in the Schengen area within any 180-day period. The 180-day period is a rolling window, not a calendar year. To clarify, if you are in one of these countries for 90 days or a mix of those countries for 90 days, you cannot go to any of the others in the 180 day period. There are 29 countries this applies to including: Italy, France, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal, Greece and many others. To read more about the rules or find out more about the Schengen Zone.

So in short, once our Boundless Worldschooling cohort is over, we have to high-tail it out of Europe and cannot come back for 180 days!

Other questions we got asked about doing the program:

Q: Do you keep your current house in the U.S.?
A: We are keeping our current home in PA. I have talked to some other families and they are renting their homes out for the length of the program. In think it just depends on what your current situation is and what works best for you!

Q: Given the education is in English, how do the kids learn Italian?
A: The school specifically does not teach the local language but being in another country they make sure to engage and emerge you in the local culture. For our family specifically we wanted to learn some Italian phrases and we downloaded Duolingo - a free app to teach you a language. My kids LOVE it and ask me every morning when we can do it together. I think this is a great way to preemptively prepare for another culture, even if you are only traveling there for a few weeks it’s great to know a few key phrases and words!

Q: How are you able to work in another country?
A: Obviously, this could be for anyone who has a remote job or owns their own company. The main thing would be talk to your place of employment and make sure to clear it with them. Most people we have talked to who have done the program just needed a VPN for the location or country they will be working from. I personally work for a tech company doing marketing and so I work fully remote.
