Where to Stay in Italy With Kids: Why Agriturismo’s Are Perfect for Families
If you’re planning a family trip to Italy and wondering where to stay, an agriturismo may be one of the best—and most underrated—options.
Agriturismos combine the space and comfort families need with the charm, food, and culture Italy is famous for. After staying at several across the country, they’ve become our go-to accommodation for traveling Italy with kids.
Below, we’ll explain what an agriturismo is, why it works so well for families, and share some of our favorite family-friendly agriturismos near Florence, Rome, and Southern Italy.
What Is an Agriturismo in Italy?
An agriturismo is a working Italian farm that hosts guests. The word comes from agricoltura (agriculture) and turismo (tourism).
By law, agriturismos must:
Be active farms (olive groves, vineyards, livestock, produce, etc.)
Earn most of their income from agriculture
Use farm-grown or locally sourced food for meals
Accommodations range from:
Simple B&B-style rooms
Apartments with kitchens
Restored farmhouses and countryside villas
Many also offer:
Farm-to-table breakfasts or dinners
Pools and large gardens
Farm animals and outdoor space
Cooking classes, tastings, and tours
Why Agriturismos Are Ideal for Families
After traveling Italy extensively with kids, here’s why we consistently choose agriturismos over hotels:
🌿 Space for Kids to Be Kids
Unlike city hotels, agriturismos offer wide-open outdoor space. Kids can run, play, explore nature, and burn off energy—often safely enclosed and encouraged.
🏡 Apartment-Style Comfort
Many agriturismos offer family apartments with kitchens, separate bedrooms, and outdoor seating—perfect for early bedtimes, snacks, and downtime.
🏊 Pools + Nature
A pool plus countryside views is a game-changer after busy sightseeing days. Parents relax, kids play, everyone resets.
🍝 Incredible Food (Without the Stress)
Farm-fresh breakfasts, on-site restaurants, or easy meals back at your apartment = less logistics, better food.
📍 Close to Major Cities—Without the Chaos
Many agriturismos are 20–40 minutes from major cities, letting you explore Florence or Rome by day and retreat to peaceful countryside at night.
