What’s the best way to see Rome with your kids? - A Golf Cart Tour

Exploring Rome by Golf Cart: The Best Family Tour We Didn’t Know We Needed

If you’re planning a trip to Rome with a wide range of ages—think little kids, grandparents, and everyone in between—this is one experience I cannot recommend enough. We recently did a golf cart tour of Rome as a family (with kids as young as 4 and adults up to 69), and it ended up being one of our absolute favorite days of the entire trip. It is only April and the temperatures are already getting warmer in Italy. It hit 80 degrees (Fahrenheit) the one day of our trip! With that being said walking around the city can get super hot! One of the highlights of having the golf cart drive us around was none of the kids complaining they were tired or hot.

Why We Chose a Golf Cart Tour and Why It Was the Right Call

Rome is incredible—but it’s also big, busy, and full of cobblestones. We knew trying to walk everywhere with younger kids (and even older adults) could quickly turn from magical to exhausting. That’s where this tour completely changed the game. Golf cart tours are designed to be a comfortable and efficient way to see Rome’s top highlights without all the walking, while still getting the stories and history along the way.

It felt like the perfect balance between a guided tour and a private, flexible experience. Also, our guide was so sweet and knowing we had younger kids with us made it more family friendly. He of course would point out and talk about the major sites we were seeing and tell us adults the history but made it fun and not boring for kids!

What We Saw

One of the best parts of this tour is that it’s completely customizable—you can choose what you want to prioritize, how long you want to spend at each stop, and even discover hidden spots you’d never find on your own. We also had them stop at a local restaurant for us to get some drinks and snacks to hold the kids over since our tour was in the early evening. The adults even got a glass of wine to go! While on the golf cart, we went past a lot of historic and iconic places but these are the specific places we got off the golf cart.

Here are some of the major things we asked see:

  • The Spanish Steps

We started with one of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. The kids loved running around the steps while the adults soaked in the views.

  • The Colosseum

Seeing the Colosseum in person never gets old. Being able to pull up nearby without a long walk was a huge win for our group.

We went to a scenic part where we were able to take pictures and have the perfect backdrop!

  • Trevi Fountain

No trip to Rome is complete without tossing a coin into the Trevi Fountain—and arriving here by golf cart made it so much easier than navigating the crowds on foot. You have to pay 2 euros to go to the bottom of it now but it’s absolutely worth it and they crowd control so it’s way easier to get pictures!

Pro tip: Go right before it closes at 9. They stop letting people in by about 8:55pm and as people clear out it is so much easier to get better pictures!

  • Piazza Novena

We asked to stop to get a snack and drink and this is where our guide took us. The Piazza is not only gorgeous but has the “Fountain of the Four Rivers" and the Church of Sant'Agnese in Agone.

We stopped at a restaurant and got a sandwich for the kids and some wine for the adults - Tre Scalani. You were able to take it to go and onto the golf cart. We liked the food and the people here so much we actually came back the next day as we were walking around the city!

  • St. Peter’s Basilica & Vatican City

Another must-see—and again, the ease of getting there without navigating public transport or long distances made all the difference. We were able to walk around a little and our guide told us some of the highlights and history.

  • A “Secret” Spot

italy tour with kids - Janiculum Hill

This might have been our favorite moment of the entire tour. Our guide took us to a hidden panoramic viewpoint - Janiculum Hill

These tours often include both iconic landmarks and lesser-known hidden gems, which is what makes them feel so unique. Even if you went here during the day, the views of the whole city were truthfully magically! Pictures just didn’t do it justice.

Why This Tour Works So Well for Families

If you’re traveling with multiple generations like we were, this is where the golf cart tour really shines. But even if you are just a family or have kids, this is the BEST option to see the major sites without having to walk miles. The day we did the tour, we had already done 15K steps in the first half of the day!

  • No long walking days (huge for little kids and older adults)

  • Comfortable seating the entire time

  • Ability to stop when you want

  • Engaging guides who bring history to life

  • Private, flexible itinerary

It’s honestly one of the easiest ways to see a lot of Rome in a short amount of time—without anyone feeling overwhelmed.

Golf cart tours are especially popular for families because they let you see more in less time while staying relaxed and comfortable.

Our Honest Take

We’ve done a lot of tours in a lot of cities, and this one stands out. It wasn’t just about checking off landmarks—it was about experiencing Rome together in a way that worked for everyone in our group. No stress. No complaints. Just a really, really fun day. If you’re on the fence—this is your sign to book it! I can’t recommend this tour enough!!!

If you’re planning a Rome itinerary and want something that works for everyone in your group—this is one of those rare experiences that truly delivers.
