When we were living in London last summer, I took my 3-year-old to The Paddington Bear Experience on a whim and he STILL talks about itβ¦ over a year later! That alone probably tells you how we felt about this one. π
There are so many things to do with kids in London that it can be hard to know which of the paid attractions are actually worth adding to your itinerary. But if you're traveling with younger kids, especially around ages 3β7 and I think this is such a fun one. And you definitely do not need a child who is obsessed with Paddington to enjoy it. I of course knew the story but not much else and I truly LOVED this experience.
The whole thing is much more like stepping inside an interactive story than walking through a Paddington museum. You move through different rooms, meet characters, solve little challenges and help carry the story along until you eventually arrive at Windsor Gardens for a big Marmalade Day celebration. Here's what to expect and why we think it's especially good for younger kids.
What Is The Paddington Bear Experience?
The Paddington Bear Experience is an immersive, interactive walkthrough attraction on London's South Bank.
Instead of sitting and watching a show, your group actually moves through the story. You'll travel through different Paddington-themed sets, meet live characters and complete little activities along the way as everyone helps prepare for Marmalade Day. The official experience covers is mutliple rooms and takes roughly 70 minutes, although you can stay longer in the Windsor Gardens area at the end. That interactive part is what made it SO good for my 3-year-old. He wasn't being asked to sit quietly and listen to someone talk for an hour. He was actually doing things.
Why We Loved It With Younger Kids
I think this attraction really shines with younger kids because something is constantly happening. You aren't walking into a room, staring at something behind glass and moving on. The kids are part of the experience!!! There are different characters guiding you through each section, little puzzles and activities to complete, and completely different environments as you move from one room to the next.
At one point you're at Paddington Station. Then you're traveling toward Windsor Gardens. Then suddenly you're in Peru. The sets are really well done, and the change of scenery kept my 3-year-old interested the entire time. Recent family reviews describe it almost like a very gentle escape room for children, with each room giving the group another little problem or challenge to solve.
Do Your Kids Need to Know Paddington Bear?
No! Obviously, if your kids already love Paddington, they're going to recognize more of the characters and little details. But I genuinely don't think they need to know the story beforehand. We took my 3 and 7 year old when they didnβt really know anything. One of the best things about this experience is that the entertainment doesn't depend entirely on understanding Paddington.
Kids can still:
Explore the rooms
Interact with the actors
Look for things
Help solve puzzles
Take part in the activities
Explore the jungle
Make their way toward Marmalade Day
It's an adventure whether you know every Paddington story or have barely heard of him. That makes it a much easier activity to recommend for a family trip to London.
What Actually Happens During the Experience?
I don't want to give EVERYTHING away because part of the fun is not knowing exactly what is coming next. But here's the general idea.
You enter through Mr. Gruber's Antiques Store before beginning the adventure at Paddington Station. From there, you board a themed train toward Windsor Gardens and continue through multiple recreated locations from Paddington's world. Throughout the experience, different characters help move the story alon and the kids aren't just watching them. They're asked to help. You'll search for things, solve simple challenges and participate in different parts of the story as you move from room to room. There are enough little jobs for the kids that they actually feel like they're helping. And THAT is what made my son love it.
The Ending Might Have Been His Favorite Part
Once you've made your way through the main experience, you end up in a huge indoor Windsor Gardens area set up for Marmalade Day. This is where everything slows down. Instead of immediately being ushered toward the exit, kids can hang out and explore. There are little games and activities, places to take pictures and most importantly - you can meet Paddington. The official experience actually lets families stay in this area longer after the approximately 70-minute walkthrough ends.
There is also a small food and drink stand. And YES...You can get a marmalade sandwich! If you're going to enter Paddington's world, you might as well fully commit.
Is The Paddington Bear Experience Good on a Rainy Day?
YES!!! This is exactly the kind of London activity I like having on an itinerary because you're not completely dependent on the weather. The main experience is indoors, and then you finish inside the large Windsor Gardens celebration area. If the forecast is looking particularly rainy or cold, this is a REALLY easy activity to build around.
Where Is The Paddington Bear Experience?
One thing that may surprise you: It's NOT at Paddington Station. The experience is actually inside County Hall on London's South Bank, right by Westminster Bridge and next to the London Aquarium.
The address is:
Riverside Building, County Hall
Westminster Bridge Road
London SE1 7PB
That makes it really easy to combine with other family attractions.
You are near:
π‘ London Eye
π SEA LIFE London Aquarium
π° Westminster + Big Ben
π€ Thames River cruises
π South Bank
The closest Tube stations are Westminster and Waterloo, with Waterloo about a 10-minute walk away.
How Long Should You Plan For?
The official walkthrough takes approximately 70 minutes from your ticket time. BUT...
I wouldn't schedule something else exactly 70 minutes later. Your kids may want to spend time afterward playing in Windsor Gardens, getting a snack and meeting Paddington. I would personally block out around: 2 hours total That keeps the experience from feeling rushed and getting to enjoy the
Can You Take Pictures?
Yes. The current official policy allows photography and filming throughout the experience, although flash photography isn't permitted. There are also additional photo opportunities once you reach Windsor Gardens, including with Paddington.
A Few Things Parents Should Know Before Going
There is a lot of walking and standing. The main experience lasts around 70 minutes and has limited seating along the way. For most kids this shouldn't be a problem because you're constantly moving and doing things, but it's useful to know before going. Some sections can be louder or darker. The official site notes that there are moments with loud sound effects and flashing lights, so that's something to consider if your child is particularly sensitive to sensory stimulation.
Also, give yourself time at the end. Don't rush through Windsor Gardens. This was part of what made the experience fun for us. Let the kids play, meet Paddington and get that marmalade sandwich.
What Would We Pair With It?
Because you're already on the South Bank, I wouldn't spend the rest of the day bouncing all over London. I'd keep it easy to sticking to this area. You could do:
Morning: Paddington Bear Experience
Lunch: BrewDog Waterloo (kid-friendly brewery with some activites like duck pin bowling and a huge slide for kids).
Afternoon: London Eye OR Thames boat ride
Then: Walk toward Big Ben/Westminster
Or do the Paddington Experience in the afternoon after a morning at another nearby attraction. This area is one of the easiest places in London to stack a few kid-friendly activities without spending half the day getting on and off the Tube.
PRO TIP: Pick 1 or 2 paid activities and mix it with some free activities. In this area, there is a free public park - Jubilee Gardens, Leake Street Tunnel, Brewdo Waterloo, & Passyunk Avenue. You dont need to sit down and eat or drink . If you want to go to Brewdog or Passyunk you can play games like airhockey, foosball, and a couple others. Brewdog has ducki-pin bowling, a multiple level slide kids can run around
Is The Paddington Bear Experience Worth It?
For younger kids, I think YES. It isn't something I would necessarily put at the top of the list for teenagers. But if you're visiting London with a 3-7-year-old? I think this is exactly the kind of attraction that gives THEM something to be excited about. London has incredible museums, palaces and historic sites β and we absolutely take our kids to those. But I also think every family trip needs activities where the kids aren't just along for something the adults want to see. This was one of those activities for us.
We took my son when he was 3 years old while we were living in London, and he still talks about it. That's enough for me. β€οΈ
FAQ
Q: What Ages Is The Paddington Bear Experience Best For?
A: The attraction officially says it is suitable for all ages. But I think the sweet spot is younger kids, roughly ages 2β7. That doesn't mean an 8- or 9-year-old Paddington superfan wouldn't enjoy it. But if you're trying to decide whether this is worth the ticket price for your family, I think preschool and early elementary-age kids are who I would prioritize it for. We took my son when he was 3, and he absolutely loved it. He still brings it up more than a year later. And that is NOT something I can say about every activity we've paid to do while traveling.
Q: Do kids need to know the Paddington story?
A: No. Knowing Paddington makes some of the details more meaningful, but the experience is interactive enough that kids can enjoy the rooms, actors and activities without knowing the story beforehand.
Q: How long is The Paddington Bear Experience?
A: The guided portion is approximately 70 minutes, and you can spend additional time in the Windsor Gardens area afterward. I would plan for about 2 hours of time for this.
Q: Where is The Paddington Bear Experience?
A: It's at County Hall on the South Bank, near Westminster Bridge, the London Eye and SEA LIFE London Aquarium, not at Paddington Station.
Q: Can you meet Paddington?
A: Yes! There are photo opportunities with Paddington in the Windsor Gardens section at the end.
Q: Can you buy food there?
A: There are treats available around the Marmalade Day/Windsor Gardens portion of the experience including, marmalade-themed treats, some small bakery items and soft drinks.
Q: Is it good for a rainy day in London?
A: Absolutely. Because the experience is indoors, it's a great activity to have on your itinerary when London weather isn't cooperating.
